IBM is usually spend-y for what you get, and I don't like their tech support as much as the others. Both Compaq and Dell have great tech support, as long as you stick to the business end of things (as opposed to the products geared toward the home user.) NOTE: When I say great tech support, I mean how much arguing I need to do to get them to solve my problem, which is usually hardware related, and then how fast can they get a spare part out to me. Other than that.... I guess I would make sure that the computer you get has all the available ports. New laptops are sometimes leaving off "legacy" items like the serial port - no good if you have an old Sun system with console only access!!! Or an older palm pilot cradle. Make sure it has lots of ram, like 512 MB, and a good amount of Hard drive space, like 40 GB (I use my laptop for a file server a lot to help with on-site installations of my user's computers) So in the end, it doesn't really matter, I guess - they are all the same as long as whatever you get does what you want it to do.
