Sounds like your SMTP server isn't responding. The fact that "ping
smtp_server" works says that the smtp server is at least alive. Is the smtp
box a secureNAT client?

When trying to Telnet to the (Internal) SMTP server from the ISA server I
get "Could not open a connection to host"
I can ping it I just can't telnet to port 25

Make sure that the credentials are correct. That stopped me a few times.
Also, make sure you can "telnet <smtp_server> 25" from the ISA and see the
SMTP prompt from the server.

I'm trying to setup my Alerts. When I run the email test I get a message
that the simulation was not successful and the email was not sent. Has
anyone else seen this error and know what causes it?
