There's 4 or 5 MSDE instances on most SBS servers and they are probably
not all at the same patch level or version. I suspect that is part of
the problem.

Yep - Susan reported this to the SQL team and I worked with them to
validate this.
I never had a repro anywhere near as long as she describes (~5 mins) and
the SQL folks were never able to answer conclusively why it took so
long.

And I hear that it is taking a long time for the patch to stop and start
the services...like 15 minutes long. You just have to sit and wait. SBS
people have an obsession with patching and they are getting burned by
impatience on this one.

Unfortunately, the KBs are lagging the patches lately.
For ISA Servers,
1. if you don't install "Advanced logging", ISA doesn't use or install
MSDE
2. if you do install Advanced Logging (installed by default):
a. the ISA MSDE instance cannot listen on the network
b. no ISA policies allow traffic to the ISA-local SQL
c. there is no web application accessing ISA-local SQL.
If any of these facts change, install the SQL patch at your earliest
off-hours opportunity. Otherwise, do it at your leisure.
If ISA uses MSDE logging, installation of this patch *will* cause the
ISA services to stop, but the patch installer will attempt to restart
them.
