RE: OT: VB Assistance please Jim :-)

I'll be online tomorrow what is the time difference?
I'm always connected in some fashion.

That'd be great. Will be in the office anyway for a Thin Client
evaluation...

Well, lets try and touch base on that over the weekend via IM. I'll help
you walk through it.

Thanks Joseph

Lucky for me my only aim was to differentiate between files which had
changed since my last backup (had a bit of a wobble on my file server
and had to restore). It's interesting though what you say about the
timestamps etc for the different OS's... definitely food for thought..

BTW, I'm still trying to crack the problem on my ISA as to why I cannot
get your SQL import scripts to work. It still keeps on moaning about
gDailyLogRun...

Cheers
William R.

Hi William,

One other note:
Forensically speaking, every time that you run a virus scan on a windows
type of OS the last modified date actually changes. I've been asked the
question about last modified times, last access times and file creation
date lately. Not all systems handle date information the same. For
example, Windows NT and its successors record a date and a time for each
date stamp. Windows 95, 98 and Me, record all the MAC dates, but only
creation and last modification times. The file date stamps of Windows NT
and its successors will in part reflect the date of the computer used to
view the file date stamps; that is, file date stamps are time zone
sensitive. This means that files created on the West Coast will show
different times and dates when reviewed on the East coast. Thus, we
should always note the time zone from which files originate. Files
transferred on CD will typically have creation dates reflecting the date
and time that the files were written to the CD.

Just a small bit of information. Depending on what your trying to do, I
would investigate the ways a hacker can fool date time stamps. And do a
search on forensic date and investigation.

BTW, I don't' feel bad that you did not ask for my assistance. :( lol

Thank you,

Joseph

Hi Jim

Apologies for intruding on the list for your reply, but I'm dead sure
many people may find your reply useful, being the VB boff that you are
;-)

I have a VB Script in which I am trying to locate all files on a server
that have been modified since a certain time and date. The crux of my
query is as
follows:

strQuery="Select Name,LastModified,FileSize FROM CIM_DATAFILE WHERE
Drive='c:'"

What I would love to do is include the following "where" clause to find
files modified since 09 July 2004 at 10:00:00am: " where
Left(LastModified,10) > 20040907100000"

Obviously the above doesn't work though, so I was wondering if you might
be able to shed some light on the matter for me?

TIA
William R.
