I have tried that as well now, and it still does not work.
My http and https is limited to certain groups, of which I am part of.
I have found that I have to add the group Anyone to make it work, so it
would appear it needs anonomous access?
I cant hive http and https to Eveyone, so that wont work for me.

I am having the same problem with the same error code on the new Windows
Update site v5. The only way I was able to get it to work is create a
protocol rule that allows HTTP and HTTPS, and a site and content rule
that allows all traffic to the following sites:
*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
download.windowsupdate.com
windowsupdate.microsoft.com
I have tried the proxycfg with no luck. I would like to find a better
solution to the problem.

Auto-updates uses WinHTTP, not WinInet to make web requests.
If you don't have the proper proxy settings there, then it can't get
out.
ProxyCfg is the proper way to "educate" WinHTTP when you can't update

At work through the ISA, no good.
At home it is just fine.
I am both a firewall client and a secure NAT client.
I have tried clearing both the local and the ISA cache, with no joy.
Some instructions say that I should put the target addresses in the
"don't use proxy for these addresses" list. I haven't tried it yet, but
if the ISA box is my only physical path to the internet, how could that
help or work, if it does?
Anyone else having the same problem?
I couldn't get through to MS tech support on the matter last night.
