For those of us that actually read (and understand) technical documents, it
would be correct.
:-)
There are devices being marketed as "routers" by the cable and DSL
manufacturers that are nothing more than combination "modem/bridges" and
have no real "routing" capabilities.

Hi Jim,

Those would be commonly be incorrectly referred to as a "DSL modem" ,
because of how it modulates and demodulates digital to digital signals

That depends on what kind of router we're talking about.
Many DSL and cable "routers" are nothing more than fanciful bridges with
marketroid naming.
With those devices, the "router" *my fingers are starting to hurt)
doesn't actually use an IP, but instead bridges your network to the ISP
/ telco / cableco.

I am looking at putting a router at the edge of my network, keeping the
ISA
as the firewall and the mail, internal DNS, etc etc behind that. I have
no
problem being able to forward traffic from the router to the firewall.
What
I would like to clarify is the external interface of the ISA. Can it be
in
the same range or does it have to be different range. Also I will most
definitely want to control outbound access through the firewall still.
Do I
need to set the router as the ISA's internal gateway? I have never had
to
setup in this way, im sure I could nut it out, but I just thought id get
the
heads up from anyone who has two cents to spare.
