Only if it's dynamic. Static split dns requires two servers governed by
the same process scheduler and swapper.

Over RPC, but only if the locater is not swapped out.

Doesn't split dns need RPC over the print spooler??

I'll try everyone, I'll try.

Andrew, split DNS in its most basic term has only one requirement, 2
different DNS servers both holding SOA over the same domain name as
either a standard or AD integrated domain.

Therefore, at least 2 DNS servers are required (well even that not
really if you want to get technical and know what you are doing) where
they are and what they are are up to you. It all depends on physical
connections and routing tables.

Generally speaking, in split DNS, one server (zone) is configured for
private addresses and one for public. The public one can be in a DMZ,
third party, separate connection, or even on the same LAN if you have
multiple public IPs available and can properly configure DNS on the
local LAN to use the proper server.
