Sorry, I haven't read all the postings on this thread. There are just
too many. But have you looked at Mark Minasi's "Windows Server 2003"
book? He has a big section in it talking about split DNS. I think you're
making it harder than it is.

http://www.ISAserver.org

I have to ask this so don't flame me.

This is what I have been told so far by a colleague of mine regarding
this whole split-DNS thing.

The external refers to my domain name A records The internal refers to
my local dns records

I must create a owa / exchange in my external A records for it to work,
or use the host file which basically does the same thing. I have been
using the host file since day one and have not had any success.

So if I am correct about adding both owa. and exchange. to my public net
name (smoothrunnings.ca) I will go a head and do that for argument sake.

Interesting twist to all this, my ADSL is now connected directly to my
ISA box so that I can rule out of there being and double natting which
doesn't change anything.

Andy, this is the most telling thing you've said all week.

Think "public" DNS and "private" DNS
- Public has a zone called "lackofbrain.com", hosts Internet-reachable
records and is ONLY used to resolve "lackofbrain.com" records by
Internet hosts
- Private has a zone called "lackofbrain.com", hosts
private-only-reachable records and is used ONLY by the hosts in the
internal network

Do I need to have a DMZ to do a split DNS? My ISA box has two NICs and
only 1 connection.

Yes.

Try this explanation: Internally, the example.moc domain is an AD
integrated DNS zone containing private IPS and AD information. It is
held by the DNS DC servers on the Internal network. Externally, the
example.moc domain is a standard DNS zone containing public IP addresses
for needed servers and services, such as MX, corresponding A, NS and
SOAs. These can be on a separate DNS server say in a DMZ, or on a DNS
server held by a third party.
