To be clear -
I'm not saying that you can't get it to work - its clear that you can. I run
ISA on Virtual Server and VPC all day to repro customer issues with great
success.
What I am saying is that the standard support statement for ISA is this:
- ISA is not supported on virtual machines in production environments.
It wasn't tested this way prior to shipping and until the ISA test team can get
that done, the support statement remains.
Andy is (surprisingly) correct in one thing - if a large customer wants to
convince MS to support them, then that may happen.
The thing to keep in mind is this:
- just because Megacorp can get support in now way indicates that anyone else
will. This is called a "one-off" and actually serves to provide real-life
testing.
The two reasons this isn't supported for everyone "our of the box" are:
1 - large companies generally have folks on staff with real experience in
complex deployments
2 - they'll provide a case study and allow direct access to the servers when
required.
..neither of those are typical of smaller (especially one-man) shops.

I am using vmware ESX on production environment. 1.5 years ago I have 6 P4 and
exon server. I bought new 2U dual AMD opteron server (tyan) But before the
conversion I monitored the 6 machine (cpu,network,ram and disk access) 1 month.
After the monitor report some machines use ram and disk intensive applications
others network and cpu. I decided new server support all machine virtually. I
converted to these Physical to vmware ESX server.
1 ISA 2000 (internet access for 1500 user)
2 SNA server support 400 concurrent connection)
1 Symantec antivirus. (manage and update virus definiton for 1500 client daily3
times aday (if update exist))
1 VPN server (PPTP and L2TP for 60 concurrent connection)
1 OWA 2003 server(connected to DZM physical eth02)
1 test w2k server (to test new patchs) only open required
1 test w2k3 server (to test new patchs) only open required
2 Exchange cluster 2003 test (to test new patchs) only open required
Easy backup and restore option, and hardware independent OS systems, 10 minutes
restore time
Vmware ESX server have
3 ethernet card ( 1 connected to DMZ for owa , 1 internet, 1 LAN)
4 GB ram
64 bit PCI133 256 mb cache Raid card
Raid 10 disk system
Dual opteron 248

I have so far seen three companies using VMware in production so far. I know
from a colleague of mine that Deutsche Bank uses VMware ESX server in
production. It would surprise me to find out if some of the other larger banks
use it in production too...

One of my colleagues has a new toy 'VMWare ESX'. The goal is to
virtualize as many servers as possible. The question is now is it
advised to install ISA 2004 on VMWare ESX or should ISA 2004 be placed
on his own server?
