The RPC argument is always a good one, but the people that believe that
any old hardware firewall is better than a software firewall are not
rational.

Amy

interestingly ive been looking at a linksys wireless router the last few
days. and i also have an older netgear router/switch (which i use the
switch part of only) and i can say as good as they are at what they are
they are not an ISA by far. The linksys one can now control outbound
access to particular computers but cannot limit access to one specific
protocol via a source ip. Once the "ports open" its open. Also i had
this argument with someone about the need to only use smtp part of and
exchange server and i said i would much rather have the ability to use
all the features of exchange behind a proper firewall that actually
knows how to protect things such as rpc connections.

I prefer the granular control of an ISA for my vpn clients, the ability
to publish multiple websites without having to change ports from 80 to
81 etc but as i said they are great fro some things when you dont need
that sort of control and ability to expose your servers to the world in
a constant/secure manner.

If I could convince some clients that it's more secure than a Netgear
router I'd be making progress.

Next step is showing the ISA firewall is more secure than the PIX. Stay
tuned!
