That used to be my practice as well, but then they got better. Now it's
going to be back to billing more time for workstation installs. I just
hate to bill clients for stupid stuff.

And of course Dell's are shipping with Google desktop on them, even the
business machines. Thanks for the explanation.

How's the Windows Desktop search? Anything lurking behind the scenes?

..but in the off chance that it gets turned on (users would never do
this), it gets better. In my environment there are a lot of medical
residents...with a minor in IT. If they get bored, and they often do,
they see the network as their test lab...

On startup the (Google Desktop) proxy will attempt to read parameters
from a file called proxyParms.txt in the current directory. The name of
this file may be changed with a command line parameter to the (Google
Desktop) proxy.

The parameters allow specification of:

* the (Google Desktop) proxy listening port - by default 8088
* a log file - by default none, however the default proxyParms.txt
you should download defaults the log file to log.txt
* IP addresses able to connect to the (Google Desktop) proxy - by
default just 127.0.0.1. That is, by default, no one else can access the
(Google Desktop) proxy.

If you want anyone to be able to access the (Google Desktop) proxy,
specify:

allowIPAddresses=*

If you want requests from any machines in the 192.168.1 subnet to access
the (Google Desktop) proxy, specify:

allowIPAddresses=192.168.1.*

If you want requests from any machines in the 192.168.1 subnet or from
the address 202.173.90.123 to access the (Google Desktop) proxy,
specify:

allowIPAddresses=192.168.1.*,202.173.90.123

The loopback address 127.0.0.1 can always access it and doesn't need to
be specified.

If you let any machines access the (Google Desktop) proxy then
eventually search engines such as Google will find and index it...
