Somebody could be throwing a DDOS at you too.  Try a netstat and see what
connections are open.  Of course if the outside interface is unplugged, you
are not going to see much.  But the virus thing is certainly a likely
culprit, or somebody inside your organization is up to shinanigans.  Good
