It actually installed the management console and had a default web site
loaded as well!
I had to disable socket pooling on the w3wvc1 and when trying to utilize
the same vbs script
To disable socket pooling on the smtpsvc it would not work! Kept on
erroring out.
So, I had to install metaedit 2.2 and disable socket pooling with that
tool. My setup actually works now
And even have the IIS on the same box, I've just stop the default web
site from running
And then, delete all admin scripts, help virtual folders etc.
I understand about versioning and it gets difficult keeping up with the
many changes. It's just that if you ask how many have gone to 2003, the
percentage Will be lower then expected when running 2003 and like all
good techs we jump into 2003 with ISA and then 2003 with ISA2004 etc.
I'm just running 2003 in test right now. You can't really be telling me
you're running 2003 with ISA2004 in production are you!!<grin>

What I'm thinking of specifically is that when you install the SMTP
service, it doesn't install all compoenents of IIS, just the SMTP
service. The problematic piece is the W3SVC, which is where all the
exploits are targeted at.
It would be a great idea to have the steps as they relate to each
platform, but the time it takes to test with each permutation would put
me in a pay grade that I'm never going to be in :-) So, I have to
standardize on something, and picked Windows Server 2003 as its more
secure. Most of the procedures are the same, but sometimes they may be a
variance. I guess we'll run into the same thing when Blackcomb or the
refresh of Windows Server 2003 comes out :-))

I'm not running 2003 on my ISA box. Someday, but for now just running
w2k. And like, I say, when you go to add remove programs and select iis
service, so you can get to
The smtpsvc, that won't allow you to add the smtpsvc without adding iis.
Especially on a firewall mode machine.
Another note: I've noticed that on isaserver.org. You have to go
digging for articles that Relate to each platform. W2K with ISA, 2003
with ISA, 2003 with ISA etc. It would be nice If the site could
organize with a structure that would allow us to filter what we want to
review It seems that everyone has forgot that some admins don't
necessarily move on to new hardware Software until some of the kinks are
worked out. I'm finding that the setups maybe similar But really do
have many differences that won't work from one platform to another.

Hi Joseph,
The W3SVC is definitely not required for the SMTP Message screener to
work properly. The complete procedures on how to make it work on the ISA
box on a Win2003 machine are in the ISA 2000/Exchange Kit on the
ISAserver.org site.

Hi there,
I had to disable socket pooling on my w2k box when I installed the
message screener. It seems that on the ISA box with the message screener
installed it required iis to be installed. So, I disabled socket pooling
on both the w3svc1 and smtpsvc and all worked as planned. I actually
forward that out to an smtp relay machine before it gets into my
exchange machine.

Hi Jim... I tried the regserve patch information on ISA 2000 (W2k3
server) that you sent
It did not resolve the problem... switched the SMTP relay server back to
the ISA server... No event log problems ... but the message screener is
not filtering attachements or word lists
This is a new instalation W2k3, Intergrated mode and "Full
Installation" SP1, w2k3 updates, Featurepack 1 then SP2
Is that the correct order of applying patches/updates?
Mail, WEB and CITRIX servers are published and working, Web site
filtering all working ... Only the message screener is the problem. It
must be a bug or problem with the SMTP filter..
On the SMTP server publishing rules properties it is "greyed out with a
tick" after enabling the SMTP filter..
I have read the documentation for smtp relay/mesage screener on ISA and
on another server but can't get it to work... any suggstions for either
configuration?
Thanks for any help recieved, and has the SMTP filter import/export tool
been created?
