Glad to know I am not alone in creating my own bonehead problems. :-)

Next question.
Will the message screener work in this type of configuration?

Hi John,

Thanks! Just wait until you see the one for authenticated SMTP relay using
TLS encryption to protect the credentials and data.

Talk about dumb mistakes that take forever to figure out:

I was trying to configure the SMTP relay to authenticate with the internal
Exchange Server's SMTP service. I used a good account but it just would not
work. I ran a packet sniffer on the firewall and Exchange Server and saw
that the authentication was unsuccessful. I couldn't figure it out. I
diddled for FOUR HOURS, essentially trying to beat it into submission, but
nothing worked.

I walked away and returned to the thing after about 15 minutes.

The answer? The account and password section on the SMTP server
automatically fills in the password text box with asteriks. I didn't think
about it, since I used the Browse button to find the account. Since the
password box was filled in automatically, I didn't think about how it was
filled out. Of course, the asteriks were just space fillers.

When I typed in the password, everything worked. :-\

That's my bonehead waste of time for the week.

Hey folks,

If you're publishing an Exchange Server, you problably want to use an SMTP
relay. The problem is that some people don't have the resoruces to use a
machine separate from the firewall and the Exchange Server as an SMTP relay.
The solution? Put the SMTP relay on the firewall! One big advantage is that
you can publish mutliple SMTP servers on the internal network using a single
IP address bound to the external interface of the ISA Server firewall.

This doc is pre-beta, which means I just finished it, haven't corrected the
voluminous grammer and spelling errors, and haven't added any Visio graphics
yet. But if you have any suggestions, let me know. The email link is on the
page.
