The SMTP servers I am familiar with support an "internal" DNS setting to 
allow for SMTP destination DNS lookups to use a different DNS server than 
the NIC config.  For instance, Ex2k has an advanced delivery config for DNS 
servers in the SMPT virtual server that let you set DNS at the virtual 
server level regardless of your LAN settings.
