Re: ARP

Hi John,

The Ethernet broadcast space is different from the routing issues. Sure,
you can ARP and get the hardware address, but you'll need a route to get
the packet to the right network ID, even if they're on the same physical
network segment.

If a e-mail server on the Internal network on private address has the
public
IP of that server added to the NIC for a peering resolution, will the
ISA
server on Windows 2000 ARP for all addresses and include that public
address
in its ARP Cache?

Example:

Public IP of ISA 1.1.1.2
Internal IP of ISA 10.0.0.1
Public e-mail server IP 1.1.1.3
ISA setup to send 1.1.1.3 to 10.0.0.11
Internal mail server 10.0.0.11

Also bind IP 1.1.1.3 to NIC of internal mail server so it will accept a
peering e-mail addressed to user@xxxxxxx

ISA receives a packet destined for 1.1.1.3 and sends it to 10.0.0.11.
The
internal e-mail server NIC receives and passes it to the SMTP Engine.
