changes the advertising you will
Get the different or same and similar IP address's logged.
There are some registry settings that you can set to turn that portion
off...

Glad you like my style; I try to ride the (wrong) ragged edge of
HR-approval... If you don't mind, zip up your most recent IP, FW and WEB
log file along with your most recent ISAInfo and an explaination of what
you belive your policies to be (they're often very different from what
your configuration describes).
This conversation started with "I'm sgetting attack alerts and the
source is a MS-owned IP set", then morphed into "someone in my network
is hitting that IP set for reasons unknown because the IP doesn't
resolve".
I understand your desire to get to the bottom of a mystery, but you have
to choose which mystery you want to solve, first. Could be they're
related, maybe not. A lot happens in the MS IP space...
Regarding the "stupid question", it appears from your FW logs that
you're allowing (some) HTTP traffic to pass through the FW service, not
the web proxy service (unmolested actually refers to "unexamined by the
web proxy service"). Granted, that's only a snip from a single log
without benefit of having an ISAInfo before be, so yes; it's a guess.
(SEP glasses are from Hitchiker's Guide; Somebody Else's Problem - they
allow you to ignore the blazingly (dangerously) obvious so that you
don't have to be disturbed by it).

Jokes aside, I think I understand what you are saying, and I thank you
for your comments, (although I don't know what SEP glasses are...) and I
am definitely guessing right now because I have absolutely no clue as to
why I am experiencing a "network slowdown" every 2nd day. That's why I
thought to look in my FW logs thinking that I may find something in
there. But as you say, maybe I'm harping on the wrong thing...
If you feel up to the stupid answer, please could you explain what you
mean by "Why are you allowing HTTP requests to pass by the web proxy
service unmolested?" (I've never molested anything in my life, and don't
really want to start now...)
I do not allow any anonymous outbound connections (I have only a handful
of SNat clients), that's why I would think to differ with your comment
about the workstations actually making a successful connection to this
site as there is no protocol or S&C rule which is recorded...

I understand your concerns, but you're looking at it inside-out. The FW
logs don't (can't) show any traffic that generated an alert for "spoof",
"all port" or "all ip" scans; this will be in the IPext..log and you
must correlate it with the ISA log time difference in mind.
Just because an nslookup fails to return a record is NOT an indication
of IP usage; it's an indication of DNS maintenance habits by the
upstream provider and the subscriber.

what I find. Fact remains that an nslookup on any of the 207.46.x.x
addresses fails, telling me that the IP's are in any case no longer in
use... And that in itself tells me there is something illegitimate about
this traffic I am seeing...

Those are not problem entries; they're normal HTTP traffic through the
Firewall service. the IPEXT..log is the one that will show the problem
packets.

I am experiencing a general slowdown of internal network traffic every
now and then, so I thought I would check my FW Logs as anything trying
to get out of my company will be recorded there.
What I have found is that there are a multitude of PC's out there (with

Naturally the 207.46.x.x range belongs to Microsoft so my thought is
that it may be a symptom of some lingering worm or something, but I'm
damned if I can find any more about it.
Does anyone have any insight on the worms/viruses/trojans etc that would
want to perform some sort of DoS on MS via the abovementioned IP
Address? Or am I barking up the wrong tree...
