Really, it's not that hard.

All you have to do extra is come up with a nice API.  This means that
there's a separation (and potential division of labor) -- you can code in
the links to the plugin API, and have someone else physically *write* the
code for the plugins.

Instead of having one person responsible for the non-display code for the
widgets -and- the display code...
