DataIO is finished, actually - just not in the part of the tree you'd expect. 
It's in $CVSROOT/app_kit/source/support/src. BTW, why couldn't you link 
against libbe? I know the app_server doesn't, but that was largely for 
historical reasons - many internal versions at Be did.
