Defining DEBUG=1 should be fine but setting the others is not necessary nor advisable. Running configure should default to r5 if you are running beos max. It should set the appropriate variables where necessary. To check that you are defaulting to r5 you should be able to run configure --help.

I'm also using both
Olver's gcc and libstdc++.r4.so (not that the stdc++ lib should make
much difference in this case).

Make sure you have installed the new gcc headers for the cpp directory, as well.
