You might want to start looking at pine, or mutt, if you feel brave
enough. There are some graphical mail readers too, such as Sylpheed, and VM
from inside XEmacs, which are quite nice, and powerful. Kmail sends out
lousy email, so I wouldn't suggest it, though I have no idea if the
interface is any good. It probably is considering so many people use it.

Dont you still have the folder with a bunch of dbx and pbx and
whatever files lying around? If yes, you can still run dbx => mbox convertor
programs and then view them with your favorite mail client.
i.e. If outlook <whatever> cannot render your emails, thats OK. You
can still try and get back your stuff. If however your entire hard disk
died, tough luck.
I have a cronjob that emails several different machines/hard disks
tarballs of my weekly emails ...
