You cannot be a kernel user. Anyway, I think that you meant GNU/Linux
and are mentioning the popular GNU/Linux distribution, Redhat. Please
read (
http://www.gnu.org/gnu/why-gnu-linux.html).
The 5 CD set of which the last 2 CDs contain `non-free' stuff. You
should be very careful when using `non-free' stuff and this gets
magnified when you start deploying apps. You may land up in a legal
tangle if you are going to install those apps for a 3rd Party ! All
said and done, `non-free' stuff is an evil thing because it keeps the
community divided and helpless. Why go along with such things which
does not guarantee your `swathanthriyam' ?
one more thing is that any body know how the core of the OS is
compiled and run or tested ?
Some say that the core of an OS is the kernel. But you will find that
other components which make up an OS are equally critical.
Here, the source code of the kernel Linux can be patched using the
patch command and updated to a later version. You can compile this
kernel for your hardware and device needs and get better performance.
Please read the relevant Kernel Compiling HOWTO which can be got from
(
ftp://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/).
Do get back to this List when you have pointed doubts and we shall
help you help yourself.
Regards.
