I'm not sure about what you want.
Three distinct pieces of code:
1) The chat application itself (ie, the GUI)
2) Networking code
3) The server
(Chat client code) > (networking code) > (Chat server)
I assume that you are interested in the second layer (networking code).
Some questions:
+ Is your net-code application specific (just for your application)
+ Do you want a generic firewall (with a proxy capability)
