Subject: Re: [Ilugc] A Linux Indian PC
This PC is definately an interesting piece of
combination of the available
low-cost hardware and software.
Since it is using the standard Hardware, there is no
quetsion about its
efficiency.
It can be seen like this:
What is the normal use of a desktop ? : Office suite
(writing letters,
worksheets and some presentation), Browsing, email
and some related things
like a messenger etc., Audio and Video players,
Games, Grafics-creation and
Accounting package.
All these functions can be easily done by this PC
because it has:
1. Fairly good speed CPU (Let's not forget that till
the other day,
everyone was using a PI, or a PII for all these
things and the software
that did it is still there and working fine.;
2. Reasonable RAM - starter PC is 64MB and then the
next one at 128 MB and
then at 256MB - the RAM being standard, can always
be upgraded.
Similarily, the rest of the Hardware being used is
very much the standard
Hardware that is available even otherwise in the
market and is already
being used by thousnads of users across India apart
from other parts of the
worls.
I don't see the resons of having any doubts about
its performance.
Yes, if someone wants to insist buying a P-IV for
writing letters, it is
his money to burn.
We are heavily promoting LINUX with KALCULATE
(http://kalculate.com) and
the response tells us that we are in the right
direction.
LINUX actually helps you reduce the cost of PC and
this is further reduced
by this kind of Hardware. It is bad that INTEL has
stopped producing its
earleir chips (486 onwards rght through to P-II),
otherwise even they could
have had a good share of this growing market. But
then, good for the users,
companies like VIA are there to offer the necessary
hardware.
