deb is an 'ar' archive, so you can extract and
play with it. Please

Just curious to know what search query you used to
get the above link.
The only issue being running the
{pre,post}{install,rm} scripts,
etc.,. AND those packages that are built with
--whatever-dir=/etc/ or
somesuch in the package... so that might become a
pain.
