nmbd obviously started up alright, as shown in the log message posted by 
the original poster.

so, the problem has to be elsewhere. maybe, there is no homes section in 
the smb.conf file? a minimal one might be something like this (reproduced 
from my smb.conf file).

[homes]
       comment = Home Directories
       valid users = %S
       read only = No
       create mask = 0664
       directory mask = 0775
       browseable = No
