im getting exactly the same error message but i have logged in as root. Now 
tell me is there is any other problem with that?

Is your 2.6 kernel installation correct and complete. Does it support
modules? Do you have the required version of module-init-tools? Compile
and load the same module in a 2.4 kernel and check what happens.
