What the Open Source world needs, in order to attract
more users, which will automatically attract more
developers (both OS and commercial) is a better Mouse
Trap! Simply copying MS/.Net or SUN/JVM WILL NOT make
it happen. A work-a-like, no matter how well it
performs, will always be second fiddle and of marginal
interest to anyone (or any corporation) using
(entrenched in) the Microsoft (or even Java) world.
What should the nature of "THE BETTER MOUSE-TRAP" be?
Well here it is. It must allow developers to -easily-
develop applications in their preferred language. It
must provide all the features of competive commercial
platforms: 3-D Graphics, Media Playing, Games,
Database support, and for development RAD tools (I'll
get back to this). It must allow users to run major
commercial software that currently exists, and more
importantly it must allow commercial developers an
easy way of porting their applications and writing new
applications which target it (and better yet, other
platforms simultaneously). But, this still is not
enough, because still all we've done is provide what's
already available in the MS world. We also need to
provide something special, something different,
