There are a few things that you have to check and
correct before making x work correctly.
1. go to your BIOS and check how much memory it has
allocated for VIDEO. if it is 1MB or lesser, then you
have no chance of making X work in a resolution
greater than 640x480(8 bit).so, change it to 8 MB. if
the 8 mb option is not available, upgrade your bios
from the motherboard manufacturer website.(since yours
is new, it must have that option).
2. Choose your graphic driver as VESA in xf86config
file or any other utility that you might use. The
other things must be same, just change the driver
feild alone to VESA.
now you have a very fat chance of making it work. IF
not mail me with full details at
shriram@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and iwill try my best to help
you. ( i myself faced these problems a month ago).
ps : PCQLinux derived from red hat fedora core-1 works
like a magic on i845/865 motherboards so why dont you
