I hear that now MS software is being used only for official (documents)
purposes and for all educational purposes, Linux rules!

that's very nice to hear ... microsoft documents are a pain
i read somewhere that microsoft's biggest profit share comes from not the MS OS
but from MS Office.
i really think that there is a need to make ppl realise that HTML is a very
good alternative to writing/saving documents in several ways.
1. a .html document is a lot smaller in size than .doc format (increases
valuable disk space)
2. many don't know that a netscape composer actually can be used to write html
documents. (i wrote my b.arch thesis in Ms Word. i thought HTML was some
programming language and one had to write code to create HTML content.)
3. viewing across all platforms.
this conversion from .doc documents to html documents should be something u can
very easily convince ur college staff if u can nail these points.
So that is where the other non-Linux freebies such as Mozilla or OpenOffice
come into picture. Promoting them will be as valid a point as promoting linux
:-)

There coudnt be a more valid point. Enthusiasm is contagious, and the only
way to make teachers enthusiastic about GNU/Linux is the students putting
enough enthu in it.
I remember my B.E college, where our computer lab was a
strictly MS/Novell only lab. There was an old old Magnum SCO unix server
which had never been used enough, and no one ever had any intention of
using it either. The teachers were indifferent, all they were
interested in is giving assignments to the students and seeing the
output of the program on the screen.
This was when the Linux bug bit me. We formed a small
group and pestered for permission to install Linux on 1 machine. A week
and couple of hdd formats later, we got the install to work! That was the
start of a movement (so to say..). By the time I finished my degree, my
college's mail/web/proxy etc servers were running on GNU/Linux. The
network was now equally divided as Windows/Novell Lab and the Linux Lab.
No wonder, max crowd wud always be sitting at the Linux terminals. There
was an even more enthu crowd among my juniors who were innovating with
Linux at all levels!

this only bcoz of a small group of enthusiasts drove the other students to
use the better alternative for learning their C/C++ skills on, and when
students are hell bent on using Lin, the teachers cant be far behind!!
