A RedHat system is robust as long as it is properly

give a M$ Windows
like `look and feel'.

debian (not woody, but the latest).

2.4.x kernels are

   Not sure abt the kernel.  But gtk+1.x is usually
much faster than gtk+2.x.  Have you tried linux2.6
with pre-emptable support?

considered to be the most popular. Dunno why they
make the machine
slower.
