Oh wait...
Ask any student of Computing Science and you will hear "an OS is one
that manages the hardware resources", or something to that effect. I
did not do particularly well in the OS course that I took, but I
certainly do not remember any discussion of pine, vi, Apache, or
binutils. You pick up any classic on Operating Systems and you will
not find a description of Emacs or ls or find. You will find process
mgmt, file systems, IPC. Whatever the importance of these utilities,
they certainly do not form part of the OS...
Sigh. I guess this is what happens when hobbyists outnumber the pros
;) ;)
