root to install an rpm file. `open' the .rpm file (if that
is what you mean) in mc by hitting enter on its name.
It shows the directories and files in the package. One can
even copy the files to a temporary location and use them

I thought RPM files were a simply a modified form of the CPIO format.
IIRC, while building garnome, it extracts the BlueCurve theme (which was
a rpm) using cpio. But watching compile lines scroll by for two hours is
insane, so I maybe wrong.
