You seemed to have jumped to conclusions... I decided to chip into to
make it approx 2%...
My choice: Emacs for coding, vim for simple scripting and writing
emails. vim is fast, and effective for quick edits. (I also love the
way it syntax highlights just about any type of configuration file!)
Emacs is bulky, but has great keyboard shortcuts for touch-typing.
Gedit sucks. Kate is great, but I stopped using it once I got used to
the emacs way of doing things. It definitely takes some effort to
learn emacs, but its worth it. [DISCLAIMER: personal opinion! I have
heard people from the other camp say exactly the opposite things]
Also, emacs has a psychotherapist. :P
Same here. I use vim for simple edits, usually over remote ssh
sessions. If I need to write a program or need to write text documents
(including my blog posts at times), or do edits over a longer period
of time, I use emacs. If the job is usually copy + paste, like making
notes, and then pasting them on email or IM etc, it is usually gedit.
Also, when at home, I use Gnus as my mail reader (which runs under
emacs). So emacs is on most of the time. However when I use mutt, I
prefer to use Vim, since I dont like using emacs client and keep
switching windows. Also, I use Planner under emacs for keeping track
of my tasks.
Again, I am not a emacs fanatic. Just prefer the right tool for the
right job.
