It is more than 5 years since I used FreeBSD for pleasure or business.
Now I am doing a ZFS encryption project and I now run it for everything.
For LUGgies scared of OpenBSD FreeBSD may be a good change from Linux and
its various issues with kernel compilation, network and audio drivers and
incompatibilities, crashes and package installation blues.
In fact FreeBSD is pleasant from the surface though of course if you go
deep inside and dig the kernel and base system you may not like it.
But I think there are very good C programmers here, so that question does
not arise.
Overall I think FreeBSD gave me skype(not in OpenBSD) which I use for my
business, I had audio recording and playback working out of the box.
Browser plays flash videos from youtube, also mp4 I guess just like
OpenBSD. Sometimes I have to download with youtube-dl python script.
mplayer can avail the Xvideo extention. I have certain BSD semantics that I
can feel comfortable, for instance the ports system and package tools
though they are similar only on the surface.
In fact all BSDs share a common history and over the years they have grown
very different mostly due to different cultures and focus areas in the dev
community.
Even in a family you have different family members with different cultures.
So having different cultures is very much like approaching God...
