i want to keep track of file changes. Any tools that can track the
files(under specific directory) and send mail automatically.
I saw one such tool on Debian. File Alteration Monitor (FAM)
FAM may not be the tool for the job.
Think of a file manager like application that needs to refresh its
display automatically when the currently viewing directory changes.
FAM is primarily aimed at supporting such applications. Here is what
the SGI website has to say -
GUI tools should not mislead the user; they should display the current
state of the system, even when changes to the system originate from
outside of the tools themselves. FAM helps make GUI tools more usable
by notifying them when the files they're interested in are created,
modified, executed, and removed.
On a personal note, the original SGI famd has poor security track
record. I would strongly recommend against famd whenever possible.
i read about tripwire. Is there any way i can tell tripwire to track
changes of all files in a directory recursively.
Tripwire is the perfect tool for the job. Read the manuals.
