Most likely bad / scratched media.

I did run the media check on both the cds before installation when
asked  by fedora and no errors were reported.

I had the same symptoms and trouble with the previous distros and when
installation is done on the text mode,  installation breaks after
sometime with this:

CPU 0: Machine Check Exception 0000000004
Bank 1: b6000000000181 at 000084314bc0
Kernel Panic : CPU Context Corrupt

Now, I am thinking about Gentoo ....

I was thinking if the kernel is ok and if it is possible to compile the
kernel everything else should work fine.
