Yes you can skip some CDs but you have the risk losing some really
cool games. ;)
Alternatively you can do what I did whenever I need things:
0. Get only the first installation CD of debian and install it onto
your machine.
1. find friends in "powerful places" (like a Tom Jose Tharayil in an
MIT Chromepet where there is decent bandwidth during weekends).
2a. Take your harddisk to that friend's place and do all the
installation you want to do in a while (!happy) loop.
--OR--
2b. If your friend has just done an apt-get upgrade on one of his
machines and not deleted the 'downloaded debs', copy all the debs
from /var/cache/apt/archives/ of a machine in your friend's place
to your hard disk's /var/cache/apt/archives/ and do apt-get update
and apt-get upgrade (this copying of files helps reduce the amount
of packages downloaded by a large extent).
3. Return as a happy guy
cheers,
