How do you acces CVS through a proxy

Actually I set up CVSROOT
$ export CVSROOT=:pserver:anonymous@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:/cvsroot/myproject
the login as:
$ cvs login
pass
here I get unkonwn host error
I tried the same on a machine connected directly to the net and I was able
to chech out so I guess there is some change while dealing with the proxy
say my proxy is 172.23.45.6
