Hi Mohan,
More than anything security means understanding. If you wanted to
do a project in firewalls you need to understand OS and Networks.
So it means aganin theory.
www.counterpane.com has lot of links for good reading.
Few things you must understand is
1) security is not equal to encryption
There is one recent article which has links at

site. The peon's guide to securing your system is one of the best
reading on this topic.
http://www.insecure.org has a good reading list on buffer overflow
etc.
I don't discourage doing firewall project. But I believe it should
be done at secondary or third level since there are many readings
to be done. It takes quite a bit of time to really understanding
which leaves you little time to do project work.

as such i dont have any clue about where to start or where to
go
to... waiting for a reply
You may have looked at the pervious replies on this topic. Go through the
material/links etc pointed out there, and if you need any more specific
help, then go ahead and ask away [on the list] !!
And more than anything, make sure you start *doing* things. Go ahead and
make your mistakes and *do* things. Thats the fun part, so, don't worry
too
much about the results just now.
Do let us know how you progress, so that we can keep pointing you in the
right direction. Probably keep a webpage with updates about your project,
that you can refer to in your mails and then we can use it to advice you,
whenever you ask a question on the list.

blank cd's by my office (iit madras aero department) and i will write them
for free. i am usually in my office between 2 and 4:30 or so. i would
recommend you call me in my office (2578162) or my department office
(2578152) to make sure i am around when you plan to come. sorry, it is too
much of a pain to mail things out, so dont ask me to*. redhat 8 is 3 cd's
for the binary, 2 more for the sources and one more for the docs. i have
only the binaries for mdk9 and thats 3 cd's. each cd will take about 3
minutes to write.
maybe, we should put this in a faq or something....

its always very interesting to do a project in networking/firewall.good
that you have intended to do one.instead of re-inventing the wheel by
writing a firewall from scratch ,you can try extending the
netfilter/iptables with lots of options which the commercial firewalls
have.netfilter is highly modular it allows extensions and new features by
writing new modules.you can also write many netfilter hooks.

PC is installed by automatic probing.
The X-Server does not seem to come up and error pertains to the refresh rate

or file should I check out.I am running a VIA Chipset MSI board 700 Mhz,
with 1 Gig RAM and 8 MB shared memory for AGP

I found GARNOME to be a _fast_ way to get a working G2D without
upgrading to the latest distroes. So, possibly you could just distribute
the tarballs. (about 70MB)

I use Samsung 32x CDRW. It works like a charm. Don't think you should have
problems with any of the standard brands circulating in Ritchie Street.
