ext3 is more mature, reiserfs probably slightly faster. I've no

Why are you reluctant to compile kernels? I almost never use a
distro-kernel and always have a source-tree ( on CD, mountable
when required ) so I can patch / test driver-modules.
If stability a criterion ( I'm assuming it is - since you use
Debian ) - stick to 2.4. If you want to try 2.6 - might as well
wear a hat.
For disk-based file access speed, have you considered 3/4-disk
raid on 3/4-ide ports - we are trying to promote the concept.
