BEEP is actually pretty interesting and very clean design,
but, like DIME, has an issue: the existing infrastructure
(HTTP (for BEEP) and MIME (for DIME)) are so ingrained, it's
hard to get people to shift. Witness how TLS has languished
vis-a-vis SSL for years -- inspite of TLS being _nearly_
compatible.
Most people don't give a damn that we're somehow
'overloading' HTTP far too much for our own good. Firewall
vendors don't see the overloading of HTTP as a problem, they
see it as an opportunity to sell (relatively more expensive)
application-level firewalls.
I wouldn't expect BEEP to get a lot of uptake anytime soon.
