the point of this entire thread is whether source
being
open is really necessary (and advantageous) than
a closed source
system (which in our example is Microsoft -- a bad
example since an
operating system that has its roots from
DOS/Win3.1 will obviously
have difficulty scaling to the modern day security
/ extensibility
requirements).
Well, source being open is very much necessary. It
isn`t just fascination, but it is a requirement!!
Let us consider, SAP for example. Its almost
going to beat
GnuEnterprise hands down. The point being, SAP has
been in development
or ages.
As u have said, the serious work is because they r
full time professionals working on SAP, whereas the
OSS 'community' as we call it comprises of a majority
of hardcore hobby programmers....the most known one
being Linus, as to what he was, when he started it!!
a. the software needs not just programming
expertise but ALSO
functional knowledge (like SAP for example)
Agreed!!
b. the software is considered "uncool" by the
majority
I sure presume it will change!!
The technical stabilitiy / excellence argument will
almost always see
most proprietary software as advanced / better
than the Free/open
source equivalents simply because lots of man hours
have gone into its
making (although, things have changed radically now
(especially on the
server side)).
Because of the extent of people who r involved in it
seriously and as I have elucidated above the sheer
extent of "hobby programmers" than "employees". But
anyway as u have said, things r changing radically
now!!
Atleast my office accountant thinks so. :)
(especially after he sees
all of us running between BSD boxes and
occasionally tripping over a
bunch of cables)
:-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
Anyway Suraj, I have a question to ask you, Do you
include those facts as ur signature, by typing it in
every time or is there a mechanism for that?? Kindly
illustrate!!
