Let me summarize what I have to say after this
"Serious" thread!! Sriram and people who have been
involved in this thread, kindly read!!
Finally, we get to the end.
Frankly , I think Windows GUI su**s when compared to
Apple's. However, I think it is better than what
Gnome or KDE currently
has to offer. I was talking about the lack of a
'usability' culture in a
lot of OSS products
We r not comparing 'ur' Windows with Apple but
comparing Windows and Linux. You didnt get the point I
had made abt visual interfaces having features which
wud obviously be similar and not 'copied','pirated' or
I find Windows bad on this front quite often too.
Great, that`s wonderful!!Maybe that`s the only front u
have seen, have a look at other fronts too!!
you'll be giving Bill Gates sleepless nights :-)
OSS is already doing that and nowadays he is busy
trying to stop people from migrating by giving counter
strategies to Linux!!
Having said that, I'll be surprised if someone tells
me that KDE or
Gnome totally ignored Windows when they developed
C`mon, how many times do u want me to repeat it? Even
if there was some other compnay which wud have started
something called GUI it wud have had these
features.....the concept of GUI is not copyrighted to
Windows...........What do u expect KDE or GNOME to
have...functions/buttons that pop out of the monitor??
However, what's the shame
in admitting where you got your inspiration from?
Don't be like Deva or
I`ve given over 27 programmes in the All India Radio
and Doordarshan, well I can counter your "musical"
opinion. Deva and Anu malik can compose music taken
from the basic seven notes, that is not copying. Only
if they recycle from boyzone and BSB stuff people call
it piracy!! GUI and music are similar, but u say music
belongs to Boyzone and deva cant` copy it!! Ultimately
music doesnt belong to anybody, they r only the same 7
notes, modified, refined and fine tuned. So is GUI!!
The same iconic representation, user interaction using
Very true...I find MS fascinating. But unfortunately,
this thread never
gave me the chance to talk about other companies of
which I'm a bigger
fan , namely, Google and Apple
Well, please dont start that, there r user groups for
apple and google. This is meant for Linux/GNU/OSS/FSF.
As for Longhorn, yes, I wouldn't mind upgrading my
comp. I'm sure my
current comp would be in a unusable state by then
However, I really don't
agree with people supporting one side when it suits
them and then
happily forgetting about OSS when it comes to their
It goes without saying that when u release a product
under GPL/OSS model the code has to be released,
that`s innately understood!! It applieas to
Sun/Moon/IBM.................and Mannar & Co. too!!
The principles of GNU extend beyond software .
The thread was about OSS and not abt OS-Hardware, well
u must know that better, you started it!! Don`t switch
to other options because it deviated from the topic.
You very clearly said, the topic is abt availability
Do look at
what's coming in XP SP2.Longhorn is over 3-4 years
Let me start an "Are you serious?" thread for Longhorn
or XP SP2 in the not-so-distant future!! We r watching
it and we r obviously not interested in finding faults
with it, if it`s good-it`s good. A spade has to be
called a spade, whether u and I like it or not!!
I was waiting for this question :-). Anyway, let me
say that atleast for
the last 3 years, I've been running genuine copies.
The truth is, I get
Windows from 2 places. One is from my college which
has a MSDN Academic
subscription which lets students install software at
home(which means I
have legal copies of Visual Studio.NET,Office,etc).
Another one is the
copy I've got from Microsoft for my Student
You havent paid for it anyway!! All r copies u got for
ur MS loyalty, maybe the company might be urs one
I was basically trying to make the point that in the
world, people don't feel that they need access to
That is the world comprising only of MS loyalists and
people who start "Are you serious?" threads in OSS
groups!! No flaming here, don`t get me wrong. It is just
a point being made abt the non-OSS world which
comprises only of MS loyalists.
I'm saying that compared to
closed-source, OSS has far lesser employment avenues
(I'm talking of
hardcore development - not administration,etc).
That is what is really changing, take a look at the
graph ever since GNU/FSF/Linus/Kernel developers
started taking their jobs seriously!!
Is copyleft good enough?
That is what the group is trying to explain to you.
Come on...you can't guess at what I would have said.
And, please, like
I've already stated, MS at MIT was due to the
students of MIT.If the
students want MS there, why deny them?
There were students who wanted OSS too.......I guessed
it seeing the repeated words u have been using when
trying to talk abt "Who-came-first?" and
Fine ...fine. I'm trying to think of something funny
to say regarding
recompiling your kernel to get sound from your
My computer plays Rahman`s music and my songs very
well, no kernel compilation was required, only a
plugin from gurulabs.com!!
I hope I cleared up some of the confusion surrounding
MS's principles on
OSS.If you still have any doubts, please do post
questions about that
nly (MS views on OSS licenses) in a separate thread
and I'll try to get
people more informed than me to reply
I have to tell that to you.You have in a way made our
stand on OSS stronger!! Try to start a
I`ll be glad to be the first member there!!
when I saw that
there were some false facts being spouted about my
group about the stuff
my friends have been doing in other college
What u said is acceptable, but what ur doing is just
the same, flaying OSS with false claims.
But ur was a benevolent act indeed, why dont u make a
compilation of all the arguments u have posted and
send it to Ms and billgates@xxxxxxxxxxx, I`m sure u
will get a job immediately, considering ur loyalty!!
Its not for me or you to decide who's going to win in
the long run -
losed or open source. Ultimately ,it's the consumer
Alas u`ve got the point. OSS let`s u decide not MS.
Nowehere in all I've read about OSS does it say that
closed software and
OSS can't co-exist
Indian and Pakistani politicians do co-exist,
absolutely no problem!!
I'm sorry if I
offended anybody...you won't see anymore mails from
specifically asked for.
Take my word for it......you haven`t.
You see it`s very simple, u dont accept this
philosophy. Well, no problem there r no forceful
conversions(in TN) and we havent been trying to do
that too. You follow what u want to, use XP, watch
videos and all that 'coooooooool'
stuff.............Pls dont try to convert us (or
atleast me) into ur MS world or keep
flaming/ranting/trolling abt OSS stuff!! That`s my
Replying to this thread is very much of ur option, but
this is what I have to say. ILUGC is already linked by
some common interests and I dont have to summarize my
point of view as such, bcos I find it already matching
the majority in the group abt the OSS.
