Totally a matter of taste. My personal preference is GNOME. 

c) If you don't want me to waste your time with questions like a and b,
answer d at least.

d) Is there a website for Linux-Newbies (particularly winusers in previous
avatar)? Where they explain answers for stuff like a and b?
