Not sure abt the kernel. But gtk+1.x is usually
much faster than gtk+2.x.
oh.. but I tried installing a 2.4.18 kernel that comes along with
`woody' and still it was sad. It wasnt as sad as RH9.0 but still it
was sad. 2.4 kernels are a bit slower than 2.2.
No. 2.4 is faster than 2.2. You probably have a speed block somewhere
else. Gtk2 has a slower feel to it because the screen drawing in double
buffered.
Have you tried linux2.6
with pre-emptable support?
I've 2.6.1 sources. Havent tried them out yet.. no time to try them :(
Should try it soon.
I read some reviews on that., and heard it performs really well.
2.6 has several performance enhancements. combined with prelinking in
fedora core 2 in april it should really make a big difference.

O(1) scheduler
preemptible kernel processes
Interactivity cleanups and big lock fixes
Enhancements in VM manager and so on.
If you want the rpms you can google it out.
