Another thing I would add, as a newbie asking most of these question Sam,
is to check out http://www.freelists.org/list/pcdlist and go thru the
archives. There are an incredible amount of issues discussed already, and
you're sure to find many more answers to questions starting there.

As Gary has alluded to, some of your question are "basic", and those
answers, as well as many more, have been addressed already. Probably many
times.
