[PCB_FORUM] Re: placement file in excel format

FWIW, if you just open the .txt file inside Excel it will pop a form
allowing you to set delimiters or fixed width columns. Probably the
same form as Data>Text to columns, but you skip a step. :)

Shiva,

Excel is highly underrated, as it has some neat features that many
people don't use. I use Excel (and Word) regularly to manipulate text
files into manageable lists of organized data. Here's what I would do:

- Open the place_txt.txt file. Edit>Select All. Copy
- Open Excel and Paste into cell A1
- in Excel, Data>Text to Columns>Delimited>check on Tab and Space> and
select Finish (you could check Next, but that only sets up formatting
for each column; the defaults are ok)

Excel splits the data into columns. The only issue with this is that the
'm' character (signifying whether a component is mirrored or not) messes
things up a bit. In any case it's an easy fix. Excel can sort too.
Here's more you can do to get that in order quickly.

- Delete the first row of data, you don't need it. (UUNITS, etc ).
- Highlight columns B through G.
- Click Data>Sort>Column F>Ascending.

Everything above and below the 'm' can be shifted over to the right one
column to line up with the rest of the package symbols.

Voila (or should I say 'walla').

When you're ready to tackle a long list of thousands of items in a text
file from doing a Show Element, let me know. MS Word has some neat
features to replace Tabs and Paragraph ends, which come in quite useful.
