Solderpaste on fiducials is not a good idea. The vision system will have a
problem finding the fiducial.

There was a time this was true.  The vision systems on early pick 'n place
machines saw the matte paste better than the relatively shiny HASL.  Don't
think that's the case anymore :))

The pick and place machine uses it for alignment.
