Sam,

Typically you don't swap old footprints for new footprints, unless you
have engineering/manufacturing approvals, or it is in your project work
statement.

If no one of importance/responsibility to your project told you to do
so, then don't do it! Why add more work for yourself? :-)

Sam,
Be careful what you do.
Swapping out there footprints for yours can cause more pain than you
expect. If there are rotation differences, or even slight variations in
pad sizes you may end up with tons of DRC's.

Also, if you are using the same schematic, I would think that the
footprint info is already there (in the schematic) and to swap with your
library name may be more effort than it is worth. Is there something
wrong with their footprints?

If it isn't broke don't fix it.

group:

I'm currently doing an eco to an older brd completed by a different
group. We have the same cadence software, and we are using the same
schematic, but we have a different database of footprints. Such as they
have r0603 and we use res0603. I'm assuming this will remove all of
their parts off the pcb. What is the best way to replace their parts
with ours?
Thanks
Sam
